My ultimate list of favorite sewing supplies
MY ULTIMATE LIST OF FAVORITE SEWING supplies
Are you one of the 33 million active sewists🧵in the US or Canada?
A recent survey, funded by Premier Needle Arts, surveyed over a million quilters and found some interesting statistics.
According to the survey, there are 85 million “active creatives” in North America.
They also found that the average quilter owns 4 sewing machines!
You can read the survey results here.
Want to get started sewing or just update your sewing supplies?
( Need to add a sewing machine or two to your stash? Because based on the survey, one is just not enough😜)
I am a bit of a craft hoarder, once I get hooked on a craft, I want all the gadgets,
Can you relate???
I am also a casual sewist, I sew useful items and the projects have to be quick.
Like my dog bandana and my reusable bowl cover.
Easy Dog Bandana pattern
Eco-friendly reusable
bowl covers
These are my favorite sewing gadgets
that I use almost every time I work on a Sewing Project
Try one of my easy projects above and let me know if you have any questions.
Sewing machine. I am using the Brother Project Runway Limited Edition I purchased at Walmart after my old faithful Singer broke. I miss my Singer, it was simple and lasted for many years. I am getting used to my new machine.
All purpose thread. Lots of options here, you should try them all. My current fav is Aurifil and Gutterman 100% cotton 50wt. But use what you have.
Clips. I just discovered Clover clips and I rarely use pins anymore, love them!!!
Sewing pins: Get flat head ones, easier on your fingers.
Magnetic pin holder: One of my favorite sewing gadgets, I use it every time I sew!
Rotary cutter (VERY sharp, be careful!)
Dedicated Fabric Scissors: My latest purchase and I am in love🥰 You should have one scissors that you save for cutting fabric only! This one is VERY sharp, be careful.
Large self healing cutting mat: Get the biggest one you can afford. Necessary if you use a rotary cutter.
Rotating cutting mat: Nice to have, I didn’t realize what I was missing out on until my sister gave me one!
Sewing machine needle size 90/14 or 80/12. Melanie Ham has a great post about this you can read here. Always start a new project with a new needle.
Bobbin. Read your sewing machine manual on how to thread your machine and bobbin correctly. Most sewing issues are because your machine or bobbin are not threaded correctly.
Seam ripper ( A very important tool for every sewist )
Water soluble marker. Comes in handy to trace your pattern onto fabric, but pencil works too.
Iron. I love my Rowenta, my husband picked it out. I was recently gifted an Oliso Mini iron from the company who makes it, and I am in love! I rarely have to pull out my big iron anymore. It is so cute and comes in fun colors, and doesn’t take up too much space on my small sewing table.
Wool pressing mat: This is a nice to have item, not necessary if you have an ironing board, but I love putting this on my counter or sewing table instead of lugging out the iron board.
Sewing Gauge: A very handy little tool. This sliding gauge is great for measuring seam allowance, especially for hems.
Fabric: You have so many options for beautiful fabrics today. I recommend buying fabric from your local independent quilt shop. They are a wealth of knowledge. Many of them have online ordering too. Just use Google to find them in your area. Etsy is another good source for independent fabric retailers. Independent quilt shops carry licensed fabric from designers like me? So you are supporting 2 small businesses when you buy from your local quilt shop😍
Acrylic rulers: I would suggest getting several acrylic rulers, another favorite is the Creative Grids 10” ruler. I love all of the Creative Grids rulers, they are non-slip when you apply gently presssure. I love my large Omnigrip 24” non slip ruler. It is my go to big ruler. I even added a suction cup handle to it to make it easier to use.
1/4” Seam tape: I use this tape on my sewing machine to guide my fabric to ensure consistent 1/4” seams.
Positive attitude:)
