Dog bandana tutorial with snaps

Hello friends,

You are going to love my simple sewing tutorial for a pet bandana.

I use Kamsnaps for my snaps and I get them from a family owned and run company Kamsnaps. You are going to love this company and their products.

This is from their website:

As odd as it may sound, KAMsnaps® was borne from our volunteer work with homeless dogs, particularly those with special needs. When we rescued our first physically handicapped dog, a partially paralyzed 2-legged and incontinent terror named Popeye, we had to think outside of the box and created special gear for him. Because of their versatility, snaps were a common component in many of our (badly sewn) creations.

We began to share the our ideas with other caregivers of handicapped pets. Because of this, the demand for snap supplies, which were not readily available at the time, slowly grew and KAMsnaps® was created.

Proceeds from KAMsnaps.com go a long way in helping to fund our rescue efforts, which are mostly covered out of our own pockets. We thank you sincerely for your support.

EASY PET BANDANA TUTORIAL

My first dog bandana tutorial was so popular, I thought I would do another.

This easy, beginner-friendly, dog bandana tutorial uses less fabric than my original bandana pattern, but you need a special gadget, a snap applicator.

I don’t know about you, but I love gadgets. I used the Kam brand snap applicator for my fabric bandana project. Once you make this you will be looking for things to add snaps to, it is a little addictive.

This project gave me the opportunity to use my new fabric. It is Blossom and Grow collection from StudioE Fabrics.

Let me know if you make something with this fabric, I would love to share your project on Insta. Use the hashtag #maureensmakers or tag me @maureenmaker and I will be sure to share it.

How to get the correct size for your bandana:

Use a tape measure, or a piece of string, to loosely measure around your dog’s neck.

  • Add 3-4 inches approximately to this measurement.

  • This number is the width of your bandana pattern.

  • For the height, this is personal preference, but I make mine 10 inches. I have a 40 lb beagle/ terrier mix, my final rectangle size was 21 inches wide by 10 inches in height.

  • Based on your measurements, cut a large rectangle from your fabric.

  • Fold your rectangle in half width-wise and finger press. This is to mark the center point.

  • Now cut your fabric into a large triangle using the center mark as a guide.

Fold and press seams all around twice to enclose the raw edge. You will have to snip the fabric in the corners that extends past the bib shape.

  • Machine sew using a straight stitch all around.

Now comes the fun part, attach your Kam snaps. Use the tool provided in your kit to poke a hole where you want your snap.

Sandwich the snap cover through the hole you made in the fabric with the male or female part underneath.

  • Line up the Kam tool on this unit and press hard to permanently fuse these parts together.

  • Repeat on the other side of the bib with the male part.

That’s it. You did it!

Please let me know if you have any questions, or tips on how you make bandana for your pets.

I am always looking for tips and tricks to improve.

ALTERNATE BANDANA SHAPE

After you make a few of these, you may like to experiment with more of a custom fit.

Although I have made many like shown above, cutting an angled notch at the top of the bandana avoids the fabric bunching around your pup’s neck, and uses less fabric.

All you have to do is fold your cut triangle in half vertically to find the center and finger press.

Measure about 3 inches from top and make a mark.

Now draw a straight line from that mark to the outer points of the triangle as shown below.

Remove this fabric.

(Refer to diagram below)

MAKE A PAPER PATTERN

Make yourself a paper pattern to maximize how many pieces you will fit on your chosen fabric.

You will need to do this with each pattern size.

Let me know if you like this version or the previous one.
