BLOSSOM AND GROW BLOG HOP:

Children’s Soft Fabric Book Panel Project

July 4,2022

Have you ever made a fabric book before?

It is easier than you think.

I just love making projects for children.

I have been designing fabric books for children under the Playtex label for several years now. I have 3 which are sold in stores all over the world.

My family gets a kick when we are out shopping and we see one of my books in a store. The Macy’s near me even had an entire display of them, my sisters bought them all🤣

IT IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK

So I couldn’t wait to design one as a fabric project for sewists to make their own.

The instructions are right on the panel. All you need is the panel and some batting.

Warning, use thin batting. When I made my first book I used thick batting and it didn’t work out so well. The center pages popped out past the front and back cover. Learn from my mistakes.

Instructions are right on the panel👆🏻

DESIGNED FOR LITTLE HANDS

I designed my book smaller than fabric book panels you may have purchased in the past. My pages are approximately 6” x 6”.

You see, I have designed several of these for large retail stores, and the smaller version is better for little hands.

Look below at the adorable cutie and see what I mean, she has no problem flipping through the pages.

(Photo is compliments of Cary Quilting Company, who, if you remember, were day 10 on the blog hop. That quilt in the photo was their project and is a free download on their website)

You may remember my easy quilt project from day 1 on the hop.

This book and plush toys would make a nice gift to go with that quilt, don’t you think?

BONUS PLUSH BUNNIES

The fabric panel also has 2 soft bunnies to make into plush toys.

So easy to make. Just cut out along the dashed lines, sew right sides together leaving an opening to add stuffing.

Stuff and sew the open seam shut.

It would be a great project to teach a child to sew as well.

MAKING THE PROJECTS

  1. Read through all of the instructions on the panel so you understand the process.

  2. Cut out pages, seam allowance has already been included.

  3. Label all pages, I use post it notes. This avoids confusion to make sure the pages end up in order.

  4. Cut out batting using cut out pages as a pattern.

  5. Layer cut out pages right sides together and place batting on top.

  6. Sew all around using 1/4” seam allowance, be careful to leave a 2-3” opening to turn out pages.

  7. Use a blunt tool to gently poke out corners.

  8. Turn out and use a blunt tool to gently poke out corners.

  9. Either hand or machine sew opening closed.

  10. Repeat for all spreads.

  11. Note that the front and back cover spreads are a little larger than the interior pages.

  12. Once all pages are complete, lay them in order on top of eachother and stitch them together. Make sure they are lined up correctly.

I hope you give it a try and make this sweet bunny fabric book.

If you do, please tag me on Instagram @maureenmaker so I see it. I would love to cheer you on.

Let me know if you ever made a fabric book, and if you have any tips to share.

It would be fun to embellish with embroidery, or add some crinkle or squeaker inside the pages for some extra sensory features.

What would you add to these pages?

You can see all of the fabrics that coordinate with this fabric book on the StudioE Fabrics website here.

I hope you enjoyed this project and it inspires you to try a book panel project.
